Place the board with a light square at your right. Put rooks in the corners, then knights and bishops. The queen starts on her own color; the king takes the remaining central square. Pawns fill the next rank.
White moves first. Select one of your pieces, then a legal destination. Players alternate one move at a time; you may not leave your king under attack.
Check means the king is attacked. Escape by moving the king, capturing the attacker or blocking a sliding attack. Checkmate ends the game when none of these defenses is legal.
